Women’s Health Domain partners, Drs. Amy Chapman and Tyler Handcock, published an op-ed in the December 11 Austin American-Statesman on the Texas Legislature’s opportunities to undo some of the damage done by the state’s extreme abortion bans.
In advance of the start of the legislative session in January, lawmakers have begun filing bills. Among them is one by Rep. James Talarico (D-Round Rock), which, if passed, would give voters the opportunity to vote in November 2023 on a ballot initiative to prohibit lawmakers from passing any laws “that abridge an individual’s access to abortion care if the individual’s decision to access abortion care is made in consultation with a licensed physicians.”
The state’s abortion ban has far-reaching consequences that go well beyond just those seeking abortion. We encourage lawmakers to revisit the overreaching ban and listen to physicians and patients on the consequences and impacts.
